PPD HISTORY

The Beginnings

2002-Early 2005:
Jim Godfrey and Howard Carron, both retired NY State police Officers, were taking lessons from Doc Walker and Gerry Tetrault. After they reach a sufficient prociency, they were able to start on pipe..

Memorial Day, 2005
Jim and Howard attended the State Police Memorial, in Raybrook NY, and Officers John Drolette and Jim Farnsworth expressed interest in piping. All four began practicing together on a daily basis.

2005-Present

The quartet of Officers decided they wished to form a band, and decided to name it Police Pipes and Drums of Plattsburgh. At this time the Fraternal Order of Police was forming, and offered to sponsor the Band. With the help of Doc and Gerry the band started with practices held every Monday night. Jim secured a practice space at the Salvation Army Hall. As word spread of the band and its search for new members, Nick Rickert would take ovcr the job of Teacher and Pipe Major, Unfortunately Nick was transferd out of our region after only about one year. For the last 4 years Doc has held the position of Pipe Major and assisted the fledgling band's growth.

The primary sponsor of the Police Pipes and Drums is the Fraternal Order of Police-Northern Adirondack Lodge #999. The band currently boasts a membership of active, retired and former law enforcement officers, firefighters, military personnel and civilians of good character from many professions. Today the band is 27 members strong and has a yearly schedule that typically contains many events. The Band is embarking on the latest chapter in it's history with Bob Kitts as our new Pipe Major.

The Police Pipes and Drums band performs at many police and fire functions and civic events such as funerals, memorials, dedications, festivals and retirements throughout the North Country and is also available for parades, weddings, graduations, religious services, grand openings and other events requesting bagpipes and drums.
